Neighbourhood Score

A transparent 1–100 score for any UK postcode, combining crime rates, school quality, broadband speed, energy efficiency, and more. We publish the full formula so you can see exactly how the score is calculated.

How we score neighbourhoods

Our neighbourhood score combines seven factors, each weighted by its importance to quality of life. We use only publicly available UK government data — no black boxes.

FactorWeightSource
Crime rate25%police.uk
School quality20%Ofsted (DfE)
Transport links15%OpenStreetMap (Overpass)
Broadband speed10%Ofcom
Green space access10%OpenStreetMap (Overpass)
Flood risk10%Environment Agency
EPC efficiency10%EPC Register

The composite score is calculated as the weighted average of all individual factor scores. Each factor is scored from 0 to 100, where 100 is the best possible outcome. Sectors with no underlying data for a factor receive a modest default rather than dragging the overall score artificially low.

Data sources

  • Crime: Street-level crime data from police.uk, updated monthly.
  • Schools: Ofsted ratings from the Department for Education (GIAS).
  • Transport: Bus and rail stops from OpenStreetMap (Overpass API).
  • Broadband: Connected Nations data from Ofcom.
  • Green space: Parks, gardens, and nature reserves from OpenStreetMap.
  • Flood risk: Environment Agency flood risk data.
  • EPC efficiency: Energy Performance Certificate Register (MHCLG).
